Did you know there are 47 species of lavender? I know, that blew my mind too! Living in a Mediterranean climate in Northern California, I've seen a few different types of lavender, but I had no idea that so many existed.
Why Paint Lavender?
Many people love painting flowers, especially lavender. Its vibrant colors and soothing presence make it a favorite among artists. In this tutorial, I thought it would be fun to paint two different types of lavender. You’ll see the differences side-by-side and learn simple tricks to make them both pop!
If you're new to watercolor, no worries! Check out my short list of the essential watercolor supplies to get started.
Gather Your Supplies
Grab your supplies, and let's dive into this creative journey! I will show you two ways to paint lavender, but you can use the same three colors for both types.
Colors You'll Need
Dioxazine Purple
Sap Green
Payne's Gray
These colors will help you create beautiful lavender blooms and lush green leaves.
Step-by-Step Painting Process
Painting the First Type of Lavender
Start with the Blooms: Use Dioxazine Purple to create the lavender flowers. Apply the paint lightly to allow for layering.
Add Depth: Once the first layer dries, add more Dioxazine Purple to create shadows and depth.
Paint the Leaves: Use Sap Green for the leaves. Paint them with quick, sweeping strokes to mimic their natural shape.
Painting the Second Type of Lavender
Different Blooms: For the second type, mix Dioxazine Purple with a touch of Payne's Gray for a darker shade. This will give your flowers a unique look.
Layering: Just like before, layer your colors to create dimension.
Leaves Again: Use Sap Green, but consider mixing in a bit of Payne's Gray for a more muted leaf color.
Final Touches
Once your paintings are dry, step back and admire your work! You’ve captured the essence of lavender in two beautiful styles.
